The Truth
You know, as cradle Catholics we were brought up in the religion by our parents. Sometimes others question the freedom of choice. I’ll get into that later but there are a lot of things I agree with the Catholic religion. I say ‘a lot’ and not ‘all’ coz I still don’t know everything about it.
Lots of topics that I could get into like abortion, the death sentence, cloning, mercy killing, but today something came up. You know with the recent news of the death of Ah Meng and being Singapore’s icon it was really sad and all that and she even had a memorial service. My mom shared her thoughts with me about it, saying that memorial services were for humans, and whats this about, since Ah Meng was an animal and she does not have a soul.
Today as a colleague of mine and myself were talking about animals, Ah Meng happened to be brought up and she said it was sad she didn’t get to see Ah Meng before she passed. I suddenly thought of what my mom said and brought it up, but to my colleague a memorial service was nothing, since according to her, we were apes before anyway, Ah Meng was our so called ancestor. I explained about the soul part and that I guessed my mom mentioned it coz it had to do with our religion, where we believe that only human beings have souls. That was when she said it was something she didn’t agree as she said she thought all living things had souls.
Hmm, we left it as that as religion topics could be quite a tricky subject, but I know for sure that only human beings have souls. The thing is, I wish I knew better on how to argue that point. Of course I would like to think there would be a pet heaven and that if we have a beloved pet who passed, we could see it again in heaven. But I do believe that its only humans who have souls, and that we are special, God did make us in His image and likeness. How can we be compared along the likes of animals? And since humans have souls, its wrong to take such life, and if one believes that all living things have souls, would that mean that its wrong to take the life of animals by killing them for food (which by the way, the bible says that God created the animals for that purpose), and that even insects like ants and cockroaches have souls, then if so, why are people killing them?
Hmm. Really wish I could argue it better. Rather, its not a matter of ‘arguing’ but rather, knowing about what you believe in. How can you believe in something when you do not know much about it. How can you love someone without knowing the person, so how can one love God when one knows nothing about Him! Which = love. I guess I really gotta read up more about my religion man!!! It sucks having this irking feeling inside of you knowing that you know the truth, you know what is right, but you cannot reason it, you cannot show why you believe in it and why it is the truth.
There are so many things about the Catholic religion that I believe in and see it is the truth, and that is why I choose to be a Catholic and that is why I believe it is the one true religion. But then again, it is not really about religion, it is about God, right? Anyway, we could go on and on so I’ll just stop here for now. Time to read up my books on Catholicism though.
